Syringe Recuperation: a Proven Strategy

Cactus contributes to its environment by applying various strategies aimed at reducing the number of soiled syringes in the environment.

Cactus Montréal is a participant in the multi-sectors committee for the recuperation of discarded syringes. This committee’s mandate is to reflect and propose strategies regarding the problems surrounding the recuperation of soiled injection material.

In the summer, we regularly make daily rounds in the neighborhood surrounding Cactus. A yearly recuperation taskforce is also organized each spring. This activity allows us to gather the sector’s various actors, including the caregivers/professionals from the healthcare network, users of our services and residents of the Ville-Marie Borough and volunteers who are conscious of the importance of reducing the number of syringes left in the environment. For instance, during the 2005 spring taskforce, Cactus recovered 347soiled syringes in its sector.
